At Shenley we are working hard to do our bit for the environment. Our Policy & Procedure outlines what we will strive to do not only in terms of cutting down on our use of utilities and recycling initiatives but also setting some environmental control standards for the facilities that you use.
In just a few months this year, we have already achieved the following:
Environmental Representative - one of our Operations Managers has taken on specific responsibility for championing our environmental efforts
Training - all our staff attended an "environmental awareness" training day where we learned why we should care about the environment and what some of the key environmental issues are. Staff also contributed their own ideas about how we could improve our environmental contribution, many of which have been incorporated in our new Environmental Action Plan
Policy - we have revised our environmental policy in line with current legislation and government environmental policies focusing on the pro-active input of staff and customers in improving our environmental contribution.
Recycling - we have had a big drive on recycling; providing more recycling bins around the building, improving signage to raise staff and customers' awareness of which waste can be recycled, and setting up facilities for safely recycling and disposing of hazardous waste. Result? We have significantly reduced our non-recyclable waste and significantly increase the amount of waste now recycled.
Gas & electricity - our staff are making a conscious effort to "turn it off!" endeavouring to ensure air-conditioning, heating and lighting are not wasted whilst rooms are not being used. We have also purchased timers to enable non-essential electrical items to be automatically turned off overnight.
Customer involvement - we have created an environmental noticeboard to keep our customers informed of what we are doing in relation to environmental issues. We are also keeping them updated via our One-LAN display system on screens around the Centre. We would welcome any ideas for ways we can further reduce our environmental footprint!
